Understanding of the rules when listening to Dhamma talk

There are sixteen of the Sekhiya Training rules setting down how and to whom a bhikkhu should teach Dhamma. These rules are also concerned with the etiquette of showing respect, respect not only for the bhikkhu but more importantly for the Dhamma that he is teaching. These rules prohibit a bhikkhu from teaching anyone he considers to be showing disrespect to the Dhamma. Therefore laypeople need to know these rules. Here is a summary of these Sekhiya Trainings:

1. Not to teach the dhamma to someone holding an umbrella (unless he is ill).

2. Not to teach the dhamma to someone holding a walking stick (unless he is ill).

3. Not to teach the dhamma to someone holding a cutting object (unless he is ill).

4. Not to teach the dhamma to someone holding a weapon (unless he is ill).

5. Not to teach the dhamma to someone who is wearing shoes (unless he is ill).

6. Not to teach the dhamma to someone who is wearing sandals (unless he is ill).

7. Not to teach the dhamma to someone who is inside a vehicle (unless he is ill).

8. Not to teach the dhamma to someone who is lying down (unless he is ill).

9. Not to teach the dhamma to someone who is sitting with the knees raised and the arms around (unless he is ill).

10. Not to teach the dhamma to someone wearing a turban (unless he is ill).

11. Not to teach the dhamma to someone whose head is covered (unless he is ill).

12. Not to teach the dhamma to someone who sits on a rug spread on the ground while sitting directly on the ground (unless he is ill).

13. Not to teach the dhamma to someone sitting at a higher level (unless he is ill).

14. Not to teach the dhamma to someone who is sitting while one is standing (unless he is ill).

15. Not to teach the dhamma to someone who is walking ahead (unless he is ill).

16. Not to teach the dhamma to someone who walks on a footpath while one is walking to the side of this footpath (unless he is ill).

พระวินัยว่าด้วยการแสดงธรรม มี ๑๖ ข้อ ดังนี้

๑.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่มีร่มในมือ
๒.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่มีไม้พลองในมือ
๓.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่มีของมีคมในมือ
๔.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่มีอาวุธในมือ
๕.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่สวมเขียงเท้า (รองเท้าไม้)
๖.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่สวมรองเท้า
๗.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่ไปในยาน
๘.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่อยู่บนที่นอน
๙.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่นั่งรัดเข่า
๑๐.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่โพกศีรษะ
๑๑.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่คลุมศีรษะ
๑๒.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่อยู่บนอาสนะ (หรือเครื่องปูนั่ง) โดยภิกษุอยู่บนแผ่นดิน
๑๓.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่นั่งบนอาสนะสูงกว่าภิกษุ
๑๔.ไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่นั่งอยู่ แต่ภิกษุยืน
๑๕.ภิกษุเดินไปข้างหลังไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่เดินไปข้างหน้า
๑๖.ภิกษุเดินไปนอกทางไม่แสดงธรรมแก่คนไม่เป็นไข้ที่ไปในทาง
