Cultivating the Divine Abodes

Metta chant and Olympians

"A Brazilian friend told me Metta chanting helped calm some Olympians, another friend told me she heard this chanting in a Dharma talk in Indian by HH Gyalwang Karmapa, and many more such sharing and stories coming from places. I can only do this much for now but I wished for one day to travel and sing Metta for as many as possible, in person . May be one day when all Metta hearts get linked together, we can also have a Metta Olympic, joint by all in this world." ~ Imee Ooi

By Jnan Nanda  Buddhistdoor Global  2016 Aug 10

A video of Muslim students helping to rebuild damaged Buddhist temples has been widely circulated on social media in the wake of a spate of vandalism by violent mobs in Tanjungbalai, a city in the Indonesian province of North Sumatra. The video, showing the students helping to clear up debris and repair damaged walls, was uploaded to Facebook just days after the attacks, where it was shared more than 10,000 times. The original uploader later removed the video, although it can still be found on YouTube. media reported that enraged mobs vandalized and set fire to 12 Buddhist temples overnight on 29 and 30 July in Tanjungbalai, near Indonesia’s fourth-largest city of Medan. The real foundation of the teaching is to see the self as being empty

The real foundation of the teaching is to see the self as being empty. But people come to study the Dhamma to increase their self-view, so they don’t want to experience suffering or difficulty. They want everything to be cozy. They may want to transcend suffering, but if there is still a self, how can they ever do so? It is so easy once you understand. It is so simple and direct. When pleasant things arise, understand that they are empty. When unpleasant things arise, see that they are not yours. They pass away. Don’t relate to them as being you, or see yourself as the owner of them. You think that papaya tree is yours, then why don’t you feel hurt when it is cut down? If you can understand this, then this is the correct path, the correct teaching of the Buddha, and the teaching that leads to liberation.

Next act in Gujarat's Dalit uprising: Plans for mass conversions to Buddhism

A month after cow vigilantes assaulted four tanners in Una, more than 60,000 Dalits are set to quit Hinduism at five rallies across the state.

The dusty chowk in Mota Samadhiyala village is rather small, but on the evening of August 13, it was packed with at least 300 Dalits wearing bright blue bands and blue tikas on their foreheads.
Located in south Gujarat’s Una taluka, Mota Samadhiyala is home to the four Dalit tanners who had been brutally assaulted by cow vigilantes on July 11 for skinning dead cattle. The incident sparked an unprecedented response from Gujarat’s Dalits, who have organised dozens of protest events and rallies across the state for the past month.

Look at the decomposition of the body

Image may contain: outdoor
Monk: Are you implying that appāna-samādhi is the samādhi which develops wisdom naturally, so you don’t have to contemplate anything specific such as the body or anicca, dukkha, anattā?
Than Ajahn: No. You have to do that (the contemplation). I have already mentioned. I was telling you about aniccaṁ when you desire for something. The object that you desire is a temporary object, it doesn’t last, like a cigarette, after you smoke it, it is all gone. The happiness that you acquire from smoking, it also disappears and then you will have a new desire to have another cigarette.
