Department of Religion and Culture Announces Annual Geshema Examination Results

DHARAMSHALA: The Department of Religion and Culture, CTA announced results of I, II, III and IV year examination of Tibetan nuns pursuing Geshema degrees on 12 July 2016.
A total of 44 nuns sat in the annual exam for Geshema degree: 8 in I year, 10 in II year, 6 in III year and 20 in final year respectively.
As per the result, all twenty Tibetan nuns from final year have qualified their exam, becoming the first batch of Tibetan Geshemas. They will formally receive their degrees from His Holiness the Dalai Lama at a special ceremony in Mundgod Tibetan Settlement in December 2016.
The rest of Geshema candidates in I, II and III year, comprising a total of 24, have all passed their exam. They are hence qualified to pursue their further study for Geshema degree.
The evaluation of debate and written test on the study of Five Great Canonical Texts were conducted by eight Geshe Lharamapas from Sera, Drepung and Gaden monasteries. Two teachers from Sarah college of Higher Tibetan Studies and Library of Tibetan Works & Archives (LTWA) evaluated the written tests on Tibetan language and Modern Science.
In accordance with the vision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the historic decision to allow Tibetan nuns to receive Geshema degrees was finalised during a meeting of representatives from six nunneries, Institute of Buddhist Dialectics and Tibetan nuns project held in Dharamshala on 18-19 May 2012. A regulation on the conferment of Geshema degrees to Tibetan nuns studying at nunneries and Buddhist learning institutes was also formulated during the meeting.
