AN 3.109

The Buddha said to Anathapindika the householder: 

"Householder, when the mind is unprotected, bodily actions are unprotected as well, verbal actions are unprotected as well, mental actions are unprotected as well. When one’s bodily actions, verbal actions, & mental actions are unprotected, one’s bodily actions get soggy, one’s verbal actions get soggy, one’s mental actions get soggy. When one’s bodily actions, verbal actions, & mental actions are soggy, one’s bodily actions… verbal actions… mental actions rot. When one’s bodily actions, verbal actions, & mental actions rot, one’s death is not auspicious, the mode of one’s dying not good."

"Just as when a peak-roofed house is poorly roofed: The peak of the roof is unprotected, the roof beams are unprotected, the walls are unprotected. The peak of the roof… the roof beams… the walls get soggy. The peak of the roof… the roof beams… the walls then rot."

***Practicing samadha (such as Anusati 6, Recollection of Buddha, dhamma, sangha, dana, sila, and devata) and vipassana (insightfully understand realities as they are that all realities are non-self because they arise and pass away according to their appropriate conditions beyond one's control and that they have no ownership in them.) in daily life help mind to be protected from unwholesomenesses or defilements, akusala until mind can completely be protected when insight is fully developed. When mind is protected from akusala, sila through bodily actions and verbal actions and thoughts are simultaneously protected, free from defilements at those moments.

3.109. กูฏสูตรที่ ๑

ครั้งนั้นแล อนาถบิณฑิกคฤหบดีได้เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวาย บังคมพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้วนั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนแห่งหนึ่ง ครั้นแล้ว พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสกะเขา ว่า ดูกรคฤหบดี เมื่อบุคคลไม่รักษาจิตแม้กายกรรมก็เป็นอันไม่รักษา แม้วจีกรรมก็เป็นอันไม่รักษา แม้มโนกรรมก็เป็นอันไม่รักษา เมื่อเขาไม่รักษากายกรรม ไม่รักษาวจีกรรม ไม่รักษามโนกรรม แม้กายกรรมก็เป็นอันชุ่มแล้ว แม้ วจีกรรมก็เป็นอันชุ่มแล้ว แม้มโนกรรมก็เป็นอันชุ่มแล้ว เมื่อเขามีกายกรรมชุ่ม มีวจีกรรมชุ่ม มีมโนกรรมชุ่ม แม้กายกรรมก็เป็นของเสีย แม้วจีกรรมก็เป็นของเสีย แม้มโนกรรมก็เป็นของเสีย เมื่อเขามีกายกรรมเสีย มีวจีกรรมเสีย มีมโนกรรมเสีย การตายก็ไม่ดี การทำกาละก็ไม่งาม

ดูกรคฤหบดี เปรียบเหมือนเมื่อเรือนซึ่งมุงไว้ไม่ดี แม้ยอดเรือนก็เป็นอันไม่ได้รักษา แม้ไม้กลอนก็เป็นอันไม่ได้รักษา แม้ฝาเรือนก็เป็น อันไม่ได้รักษาแม้ยอดเรือนก็เป็นอันถูกฝนรั่วรด แม้ไม้กลอนก็เป็นอันถูกฝนรั่วรด แม้ฝาเรือน ก็เป็นอันถูกฝนรั่วรด แม้ยอดเรือนก็เป็นของผุ แม้ไม้กลอนก็เป็นของผุ แม้ฝาเรือนก็เป็นของผุ
