Nibbāna (extinguishing, quenching, unbinding, to blow out)

[ There has been misconceptions by certain quarters that Nibbāna (as taught by the Buddha) is describing God (as taught in some popular philosophies). This error in understanding the Dhamma-Vinaya is often the result of 'wanting to see God in everything' resulting in 'cherry picking' and 'seeing things where there is nothing there'.
The following is a sampling from the Tipitaka and sharings from respected members of the Bhikkhu Saṅgha on Nibbāna.

'The wise ones, ever meditative and steadfastly persevering, alone experience extinguishing, the incomparable freedom from bondage.' - Dhammapada 23
'Exert yourself, O holy man!
Cut off the stream (of craving), and discard sense desires. Knowing the destruction of all the conditioned things, become, O holy man, the knower of the Uncreated (Nibbāna )!' - Dhammapada 383

Sharings from the Pāṭaligāmiyavagga  of the Udāna in the Khuddaka Nikāya, Tipitaka.
Ud 8.1 : Nibbāna Sutta (1)
'I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī at Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. And on that occasion the Blessed One was instructing, urging, rousing, & encouraging the monks with Dhamma-talk concerned with nibbāna. The monks — receptive, attentive, focusing their entire awareness, lending ear — listened to the Dhamma.
Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:
There is that dimension, monks, where there is neither earth, nor water, nor fire, nor wind; neither dimension of the infinitude of space, nor dimension of the infinitude of consciousness, nor dimension of nothingness, nor dimension of neither perception nor non-perception; neither this world, nor the next world, nor sun, nor moon. And there, I say, there is neither coming, nor going, nor staying; neither passing away nor arising: unestablished,unevolving, without support [mental object]. This, just this, is the end of dukkha.'
"Atti bhikkave, tadāyatanaṃ, yattha neva paṭhavi, na āpo, na tejo, na vāyo, na ākāsānañcāyatanaṃ, na viññānañcāyatanaṃ, na ākiñcaññāyatanaṃ, na nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṃ, nāyaṃ loko, na paraloko, na ubho candimasuriyā. Tatrāpāhaṃ bhikkhave, neva āgatiṃ vadāmi, na gatiṃ, na ṭhitiṃ, na cutiṃ, na upapattiṃ. Appatiṭṭhaṃ appavattaṃ anārammaṇamevetaṃ. Esevanto dukkhassā"ti.
Ud 8.2 : Nibbāna Sutta (2)
'.. on one occasion the Blessed One was ... encouraging the monks with Dhamma-talk concerned with nibbāna. ...
It's hard to see the unaffected,
for the truth is not easily seen.
Craving is pierced
in one who knows;
For one who sees,
there is nothing.'
"Duddasaṃ anataṃ nāma na hi saccaṃ sudassanaṃ,
Paṭividdhā tanhā jānato passato natthi kiñcanaṃ"ti.
Ud 8.3 : Nibbāna Sutta (3)
'.. on one occasion the Blessed One was ... encouraging the monks with Dhamma-talk concerned with nibbāna. ...
There is, monks, an unborn — unbecome — unmade — unfabricated. If there were not that unborn — unbecome — unmade — unfabricated, there would not be the case that escape from the born — become — made — fabricated would be discerned. But precisely because there is an unborn — unbecome — unmade — unfabricated, escape from the born — become — made — fabricated is discerned.'
"Atthi bhikkhave, ajātaṃ abhūtaṃ akataṃ asaṅkhataṃ. No ce taṃ bhikkhave, abhavissā ajātaṃ abūtaṃ akataṃ asaṅkhataṃ, nayidha jātassa bhūtassa katassa saṅkhatassa nissaraṇaṃ paññāyetha. yasmā ca kho bhikkhave, atthi ajātaṃ abhūtaṃ akataṃ asaṅkhataṃ, tasmā jātassa bhūtassa katassa saṅkhatassa nissaraṇaṃ paññāyatī"ti.
Ud 8.4 : Nibbāna Sutta (4)
'.. on one occasion the Blessed One was ... encouraging the monks with Dhamma-talk concerned with nibbāna. ...
One who is dependent has wavering. One who is independent has no wavering. There being no wavering, there is calm. There being calm, there is no yearning. There being no yearning, there is no coming or going. There being no coming or going, there is no passing away or arising. There being no passing away or arising, there is neither a here nor a there nor a between-the-two. This, just this, is the end of dukkha.'
"Nissitassa calitaṃ. Anissitassa calitaṃ natthi. Calite asati passaddhi. Passaddhiyā sati nati na hoti. Natiyā asati āgati gati na hoti. Āgati gatiyā asati cutupapāto na hoti. Cutupapāte asati nevidha na huraṃ na ubhayamantare. Esevanto dukkhassā"ti.
Nibbāna is Pleasant
