Explanation 解釋
Yānīdha bhūtāni samāgatāni, bhummāni vā yāni’va antalikkhe, sabbe’va bhūtā sumanā bhavantu.──’Whatever beings are here assembled, whether celestial or terrestrial may every being be happy’. ‘Bhūta’ here means any kind of living beings, be they human beings, animals, devas or spirits. The one word ‘Bhūta’ covers every being; all the existing living beings. Here there are so many invisible living beings that we cannot see because our naked eyes are not powerful enough to see everything. Known and unknown, visible and invisible ──living always exist. We deny the existence of invisible beings due to our limited understanding but we do experience good and bad events through the influence of such living beings.
Here, first we radiate loving kindness towards them. This is the Buddhist attitude. Whenever we want to get rid of problems or disturbances which are created by others we radiate loving kindness to them. We do not want to frighten them. So there has never been any occasion where the Buddha’s own disciples ever radiated hatred or sent curses towards any living beings in the name of the practice. That is not real Buddhist attitude.
Athopi sakkacca suṇantu bhāsitaṁ.──”moreover may they attentively listen to my words.” When the Buddha began to speak human beings, divine beings, non human beings became attentive. Then he continued with the second verse.
