Verses 58-59
Just as a sweet scented and beautiful lotus
can grow from a pile of discarded waste,
the radiance of a true disciple of the Buddha
outshine dark shadows cast by ignorance.
Reflection
We tend to see the things we don't like about
ourselves and others as obstructions to our
happiness. 'How radiant, how fulfilled I would
feel, how acceptable I would become if only I
didn't have all these limitations!' But everything
we experience can be turned around and can
nourish growth towards that which is inherently
and timelessly beautiful. All the unfair, unwanted
and unreasonable stuff of our lives and all the bits
that we resist and reject make up the swampland
discarded waste. The beautiful lotuses take root
and grow in the unbeautiful.
