TANTRA as a Branch of
Mahayana:
The term tantra refers
to systems of practice and meditation derived from esoteric text emphasizing
cognitive transformation through visualization, symbols and ritual. The
root texts of this system highlight a particular buddha who is the focus of
ritual and meditative practices. Tantric Buddhism is often referred to as
Vajra Vehicle or Method Vehicle.
Tantra differ from other Mahayana texts
primarily in the area of METHOD: they contain practices, symbols and teachings
that are not found in other Mahayana works. And these are effective of
the Perfection Vehicle. Through Tantric practice one is able to overcome
afflictions and deluded thoughts, progress rapidly through the Buddhist paths
and attain the state of Buddhahood in order to benefit others.
Tantra practice involve the principle of
TRANSFORMATION, all energies including the subtle powerful energies (clear
light mind). This is our evolution from an ordinary, limited, deluded
person trapped within the shell of a petty ego into a fully evolved, totally
conscious being with compassion and insight.
1) Vajrayana focus on ritual,
visualisation, symbols, Mantra - culmination of Buddhist teachings.
2) Tantric practice is a powerful and effective
means of bringing about spiritual transformation.
Practitioners of
tantra must have greater compassion and greater intelligence than those who
follow the sutra path. The special methods and powerful techniques of
Vajrayana are intended for those whose compassion is so acute that they cannot
bear to wait for a long time in order to benefit others.
According to the Dalai Lama only those with
strong compassion and an overpowering urge to attain buddhahood in order to
benefit others should undertake the training of Vajrayana. A person who
has practised the stages of sutra and wishes to attain the state of a blessed
Buddha should enter into the SECRET MANTRA VEHICLE THAT BRING ABOUT REALISATION
OF BUDDHAHOOD.
Although the goal is the same as in Mahayana
sutras in Tantra there are skillful means, it is for people with sharp
intellect.
PATH to Buddhahood - state of AWAKEN and
Freedom.
