' Many people believe in god.
But the reality is that they treat their god as an insurance policy. If anything goes wrong they claim they had paid their premiums and hence have the right to a claim.
Perhaps attending service on an occasion or once a week or contributing money to support a cause.
So when problems arise, yes, here's my membership card and my claim to divine intervention.
So for many, their beliefs in the unknown is because of a gamble that should there be this insurance my claim is well placed but should there NOT be this insurance, all i have lost is my premium.
A small price because in term or accident or health insurance, the premium similarly is 'burnt' should there be no claims. Hence people see this as a reasonable investment.
BUT Ask a person to contribute EVERYTHING that he owns as premium, his entire life invested in it too, and you will find only a few. Because there will be doubts!
A small premium - no problem. But if one truly believes in it, why not invest one's entire life?
Very few will do it BECAUSE IT IS ONLY A BELIEF. Not a fact.
Thus the Buddha in his teachings keep telling us NOT to have blind faith but to ask, test, challenge everything that is taught to us. As long as it is just a BELIEF it is weak and may collapse but once we KNOW there is nothing to believe or fear.

EHIPASSIKO - Come and SEE, Not come and believe.
There is nothing to believe in the Buddha's teachings but a lot of things to verify by oneself for oneself. '
