On the Nothingness of God: A Zen Meditation

finger
Back in 2008 I read a review of the book Merton & Buddhism: Wisdom, Emptiness & Everyday Mind edited by Bonnie Bowman Thurston. The reviewer cited a particular line that I’ve not been able to shake. “(W)hen the Dalai Lama was asked if he believed in God, he replied ‘It depends on what you mean by ‘God’: if you mean by ‘God’ What Thomas Merton means, then yes, I do.’”
This very much caught my imagination. And, I wrote on the subject, on the yes, and the implied no, and within that the power of nothingness. I find myself think of this again. And, thought I’d take another run at that mystery.

The Dalai Lama criticizes Trump’s “America First” policy

In the video posted by England’s Channel 4 News yesterday (below), the Dalai Lama also discusses the need for a compassionate cultural revolution in China and the possibility of the end of his line of rebirths.
Speaking of the Trump policy, he said:
“I believe, with admiration, America as a leading nation of the free world. So, some new thinking: ‘Only America’, ‘First America’, right?  ‘America First’ – I feel a little bit… disagreement. As a leading nation of the free world, America should act with that spirit…”

Fluttering of mind

True Buddhist Teachings

In the forest a monk can learn to contemplate the nature of things he can live in contentment and peace. As he looks around he understand that all forms of life generate and eventually dies. Nothing that exist is permanent. And when he realize this he begin to become serine. Monks are content to live with little. They do only what they need. They sleep when it is only necessary. They are satisfied with what they have. This is the foundation of Buddhist meditation. Buddhist monks does not practice meditation for selfish reasons, but in order to know and understand themselves. And this allow them to teach others how to live peacefully and wisely. Still monks life are far from ease. He works to free his hearts in order to feel the loving and kindness that embraces everything.

Bhikkhu Bodhi on Mindfulness in the Buddha’s Words

March 27, 2017 by
Mindfulness in the Western world is perhaps best known in the terms of the words of Jon Kabat-Zinn as: “Paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally.”
Bodhipaksa of Wildmind presents a helpful breakdown of each part of this sentence after offering his own definition of “the gentle effort to be continuously present with experience.”

Kids find inner calm through mindful breathing

It was five minutes before the end of recess at Westwood Primary School on Thursday.
A hush descended over the canteen as pupils seated on benches began a "mindful breathing" session.
"Sit quietly, close your eyes... Keep breathing in and out, slowly," said a woman's voice on the speaker system, guiding them through the two-minute exercise.

Top 10 MISCONCEPTIONS about BUDDHISM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYlQ0UZ1C2I

Published on Feb 9, 2017

Buddhism is extremely fast growing and estimates put its adherents at somewhere around one billion. Even though Buddhism is so popular, many in the western world, where it is barely practiced, have a very poor understanding of it. Not only have many people gained a completely incorrect understanding of it, but some attempt to practice without proper guidance and do it completely wrong. Now while these people’s hearts are in the right place, it might be wise to find a Buddhist teacher, they do exist in the western world, and learn from them.

Japanese Buddhist Temple Holds Techno Memorial Services

By Spooky, February 10, 2017

Fukui, Japan -- In an effort to make his Buddhist temple more accessible to the wider public and draw younger generations to religion, a former DJ turned Buddhist priest has been holding “techno memorial services” at his temple in Fukui City, Japan.

Attending one of the unconventional memorial services organized at the Sho-onji Buddhist temple by 49-year-old Gyosen Asakura feels more like a warehouse rave than a traditional religious experience. A kaleidoscope of psychedelic lights bathes the golden decorations of the temple, and electronic music ranging from IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) to breakbeats blends with chantings of Buddhist scripture.
